Membership Information

Singing with BSC

  • Membership – around 150 experienced choral singers. We normally recruit all voice parts, but occasionally we may need to suspend recruitment of one or more voice parts (usually Soprano) if there is an imbalance in the numbers. Please contact the Membership Secretary for current information.
  • Commitment – between 10 and 15 concerts and recordings per year. We have a busy and varied programme, and we understand that some members may not be able to participate in every performance. There is a minimum 75% rehearsal attendance requirement for each concert.
  • Rehearsals - Tuesdays from 7.15-9.45, with occasional extra rehearsals on Thursdays or Sundays and additional compulsory rehearsals leading up to performances. We normally rehearse from the beginning of September through to mid July, with a short break at Christmas.
  • Rehearsal venue – normally Lighthouse Poole, otherwise various churches and schools in and around Bournemouth.
  • Annual subscription - £99 for the 2016/7 season (subject to annual review). Discounted rate for students and reductions for those who join after Christmas/Easter.
  • Open Rehearsals – are held twice a year (Sept/Oct and Jan/Feb) and are well publicised on this website and in the local press. Visitors have the opportunity to observe and participate in these rehearsals, to meet BSC members, and to discuss and arrange auditions.

Auditions

  • How to apply – fill in our online application form. Alternatively, auditions can be arranged with the Membership Secretary, following attendance at an Open Rehearsal.
  • Audition format – approx 10 minutes long, taken by the Chorus Director. Auditions take place from 6.15pm on rehearsal days. Candidates are notified of the outcome immediately.
  • Audition requirements - Please prepare either a song (art-song in any language, or folksong with accompaniment), or aria (oratorio or opera), and provide music for both yourself and for accompaniment. You will also be asked to do some simple aural tests and sight reading.  Successful candidates generally have previous experience of choral singing.
